Gaza FREEstyle Festival 2017 – Il progetto

ASPHALT PILOTEN ( https://goo.gl/QSfLO8 )

(ENG) The Gaza Strip is effectively an open-air prison where the territorial and air boundaries are under the military control of Israel. The frontier, which currently opens intermittently, forces the population into a constant state of siege, militarily, economically and culturally.
In the last ten years, the population has been subjected to three wars and hundreds of bombings, in which systematic violations of human rights have taken place. Nevertheless, the Gazawis still stand as an important example of self-determination, providing us with a lesson of human and political dignity.
In the Gaza Strip, material constraints limit freedom to the point that bodies’ expressiveness is hindered too. The young Gazawis have been able to transform a theatre of war into a stage where they can perform their art. We are inspired by the fight for liberty in these territories and we believe it is important to seize the opportunity to contribute to their endeavor as much as we can.
For this reason, from the 13th to April 23rd we will be running a Freestyle festival in Gaza. Our aim is to speak out against the ongoing violations of human rights, and to give the people of Gaza the room to express their will of self-determination. The Gaza Strip’s population lives and dies in a land where the possibility of dreaming is denied, let alone taking a flight or simply going freely for a swim.
The festival will consist of different workshops and will end with a conclusive party where all the final work will be showcased. The workshops will be divided into:WRITING
The Art Class of Writing 2017 will join both the freestyle of the street crews and the creativity of the classes from the art academy of Kanyunhis. In the workshop, these two groups will be comparing their own styles – their ultimate goal will be to build up a narrative which will unite their unique styles. The draft will then be replicated on a wall of the city.
At the end of the festival there will be a jam session.

SKATE
The skate crew is coming back to Gaza for the second time! In December 2015 we built a skateboard ramp with some of the young people from the local neighborhoods, along with some of the crews from the North of the Gaza Strip.
The experiment was successful. Seven skateboards shared by a whole mass of people, were enough to communicate great enthusiasm for this sport.
This year, a crew of professional skaters is going to join us in order to work together on new projects. They will help us especially with building more skate ramps.
Our goal is to is to bring over there 40 skateboards, and to build up a fixed ramp and a portable ramp, as well as other movable structures.

HIP-HOP
Hip hop and music in general are powerful means for sharing and tying together different cultures. Hip hop culture breeds free expression, exchange, and denunciation of violations. There will be a cultural and musical exchange where rhymes in Arabic, Italian and English will be mixed up in the creation of a unique track, with the young people singing and playing Hip hop in Gaza.
At the end of the festival there will be a live rap performance.

DANCEHALL
This workshop, open to the boys and girls from the streets of Gaza, will represent an occasion of getting to know a dance similar to the Palestinian Dabka. At the end of the worskshop, a choreographed dance will be performed with the track composed and performed in the Hip hop workshop.

ASPHALT PILOTEN ( https://goo.gl/QSfLO8 )
The group ASPHALT PILOTEN proposes for the FREESTYLE FESTIVAL several workshops focusing mainly on women and children. Using dance to playfully connect with the body, creating simple performance tools for working in public space and jamming with simple drum machines and mobile sound systems. Building an open source of tools that can be used, reused and transformed. This will set the first encounter, ASPHALT PILOTEN would like to return with more time and create a joint project with the inhabitants of Gaza

All the equipment brought to Gaza for the workshops and final celebration will be donated to young people in Gaza in order to continue our collaboration. ——
